Help us give teachers images of girls with head coverings.

THE PROBLEM

PicDiversity, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that creates diverse visual content for teachers and provides it to them for free on our website. As part of that, we identify areas where diversity is lacking and fill in the gaps.

A need our community has identified is for images of girls with head coverings for our early childhood content. These teachers do not wear head coverings themselves and their backgrounds do not give them exposure to the cultural or religious roots underlying the practice of wearing any form of head covering. As such, the need is also for information to inform our community about the variety and nuances from the many cultures who use head coverings.

THE NEED

Women who wear head coverings (Group 1).

Our most pressing need is for a group of women who wear head coverings to guide us in the creation of this content. We recognize that a variety of styles, customs, and cultural nuances are at work in this space and we need women who represent this variety to critique and guide our image creation.

Early childhood teachers who teach this demographic (Group 2).

We also need early childhood teachers with students from this demographic. Where Group 1 will inform the characters' features, our teachers will identify what formats will be most useful to them for their day-to-day use.

TIMELINE AND TIME REQUIRED

We are launching this project mid-January 2025. We will be in touch after the holiday season to schedule a time for our first call.

We anticipate we will need 2 or 3 virtual calls (45 minutes) and a few emails. During this time, we will identify and prioritize the characters we will produce, create mock-ups for our illustrator, and review drafts from the illustrator. This is not a new process for us, but we also recognize that every project brings unknowns so we ask participants to view the process as an art rather than a science.
